Witness turns hostile in Salman Khan hit-and-run case

A witness in the 2002 hit-and-run case involving Salman Khan retracted his police statement in a court, saying he had not said that the actor had got down from the driver’s seat of his vehicle and ran away after the accident occurred in suburban Bandra.

“My statement recorded by police that I saw Salman coming out from the driver’s seat and running away from the spot is incorrect,” the witness, Sachin Kadam, a security guard of NeelSagar Hotel, told Judge D W Deshpande.

Earlier, the witness had told police in a statement that he had seen the actor getting down from the driver’s seat of his car and going away from the scene of the mishap.

Kadam said he had only told the police that a big car came and rammed into the shutter of a shop. Kadam was today confronted with his police statement but he went back on his own words saying he had not told the police about this.

However, the witness was unable to say why the police had recorded a “false version” in his statement. Public prosecutor Jagannath Kenjralkar told the court that Kadam should be declared as a hostile witness as he had not supported the prosecution. However, the court has yet to pass order on this plea.

During cross-examination, the witness told Salman’s lawyer Srikant Shivade that he had not seen the accident as he was on duty on that day at the gate of the restaurant. “I heard a loud noise and only then I went there to see that a car had rammed into a shop,” he said.

NeelSagar Hotel, where he works, is just opposite to the bakery and laundry where Salman Khan’s car had met with an accident on September 28, 2002, in which one person was killed and four others injured.

Another witness, Mohammed Shaikh, who was one of those injured in the mishap, however, supported the prosecution’s case saying he had seen Salman standing at the accident spot after he was rescued from underneath the car by people.

“I saw Salman after I was rescued. There were two more people but I did not recognise them. It was a big white car,” said the witness.

Shaikh said he was sleeping with Narullah and others outside a bakery shop when the car ran over them and hit the shutter. He was admitted to Bhabha hospital with a fractured leg and over there he learnt that Narullah had died in the mishap
.

Shahrukh Khan, the king of Bollywood, is all set to tame Salman Khan's Kick fad as he is planning big and extraordinary promotional campaigns for his upcoming movie Happy New Year.

The recently released trailer of 'Kick' starring the Dabangg star went viral on Youtube. The trailer has garnered accolades from fans and critics for its high-octane action sequences.

Salman's movie will release during Eid celebrations while SRK is planning a Diwali release for his upcoming movie.

The Chennai Express star has reportedly asked the cast members to remain available for two months prior to the premiere of his upcoming movie.

Khan, best known for his unique marketing strategies, plans to have a series of exceptional events to promote his movies as he will be facing a tough challenge from the other two Khans of Bollywood.

"Shahrukh has asked all the cast to keep their diaries free for two months from all engagements. None of us are allowed to shoot for any film during August and September this year," a cast member from the movie Happy New Year told One India.

"Nobody knows what's ahead of them in those shows but Shahrukh will be taking the cast of the film to the streets in various cities of the US and Canada to perform. Large numbers of crowds are expected knowing the SRK magnitude," the same source added.

Apart from Salman's movie Kick, perfectionist Amir Khan's movie P.K. is also slated for a year end premiere.

Known for delivering big blockbusters, Shahrukh and Salman will fight a close battle this year and it will be interesting to see whose movie will create box office magic.

Apart from King Khan, the movie also stars Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan. Khan's long time friend Farah Khan is directing the movie.

Hit-and-run case: Unsure if Salman Khan was drunk, bar manager tells court

MUMBAI: A witness, the manager of the bar that actor Salman Khan had visited on the night of the 2002 hit and run incident identified the accused but said he is was not sure whether the actor had taken drinks. The witness was on of the two who testified in court this morning in the presence of Khan and a packed courtroom. 

The prosecution's case is that the actor had taken drinks in "Rain Bar" along with his friends and was allegedly under the influence of liquor on September 28, 2002, when his car rammed into a bakery in suburban Bandra killing one person and injuring four others.

"Salman's group had ordered drinks and snacks but I am not sure whether Salman had consumed drinks himself as the order had been taken by a waiter and not me," Rizwan, who was the manager of Rain Bar at the relevant time, told the court of sessions judge DW Deshpande. 

As the restaurant was full, Salman and his brother Sohail Khan were standing in front of service counter. After some time they occupied a table and ordered drinks and snacks, Rizwan said during examination.

"I saw Salman holding a glass but it was full with a colourless liquid like water," said the Manager.

Rizwan further said that he had escorted the group to the main door of the restaurant when they were leaving the bar between 1.15am to 1.30am.

"However, Salman was not smelling of liquor and he was also walking like a normal person," said the manager in reply to a question put by prosecutor Jagannath Kenjralkar. Rizwan was shown bills of the particular table which was occupied by Salman and his group. He identified the bills saying that these belonged to Rain Bar.

FIFA World Cup: I was not hurt by Lionel Messi’s comment, says Alejandro Sabella

Four-times world player of the year Lionel Messi may not be deciding Argentina’s team tactics but his criticism is crucial and welcome, coach Alejandro Sabella said on Friday.

Messi was critical of Argentina’s first-half defensive formation in their World Cup opener against Bosnia despite a 2-1 win but those post-match comments were welcomed, Sabella said.

“I was not hurt by Leo’s comment and he has said that before,” the Argentine told reporters ahead of Saturday’s Group F game against Iran. “He likes to play 4-3-3 with (Angel) Di Maria up front”

“They (reporters) asked him how he likes to play and he answered what he thinks in a respectful way. We respect each other, we have a very strong team spirit. It is good to have an open dialogue with my players.

“Sometimes players learn from us (coaches) and sometimes we learn from them.”

Sabella surprisingly opted to play an extra defender in Hugo Campagnaro and sacrificed forward Gonzalo Higuain against World Cup debutants Bosnia and the result was a flat first half display that belied Argentine’s status among the tournament favourites.

He changed tactics at halftime, with his players feeding Messi more and the Argentine scoring in the 65th to put them two goals ahead.

Sabella confirmed that would also be the way he would start against Iran, who drew 0-0 in their opener against Nigeria.

“We can all make mistakes you know. Tomorrow (Saturday) we will start with a 4-3-3 formation and we will take it from there. We may have to change the formation or not.

“I am the one who told Messi to go (to the news conference after the Bosnia game) and I fully trust all my players from a human and professional standpoint,” the coach said.

“We have a two-way street in our dialogue because if you don’t let them say what they want to say then you won’t get the best out of them.”

Holland come from behind to beat brave Australia in Group B classic

Louis van Gaal had complained beforehand about his view from the dugout, but for long periods of this wonderful match the Holland manager must have wished he was unable to see anything. Australia, the lowest ranked team at the World Cup, gave Holland one hell of a scare and can count themselves bitterly unlucky to leave Porto Alegre with nothing to show for their efforts.

Ange Postecoglou promised that his players would take the game to Holland and the Australia coach was true to his word. Inspired by the evergreen Tim Cahill, whose breathtaking first-half volley will be remembered as one of the classic World Cup goals, Australia played without fear and made life far more uncomfortable for Van Gaal and his players than they could ever have imagined.

For Holland, the overwhelming emotion at the final whistle must have been one of relief, even if Van Gaal insisted that was not the case. They have racked up eight goals in two matches – Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben have scored six of them – and have already earned their passage into the second round, thanks to Spain’s defeat later in the day.

The Dutch were able to celebrate their second win at these finals in the company of the king and queen of Holland, who posed for photographs in the dressing room afterwards. But this was a far from convincing performance from the Dutch.

The defining moment in the match came midway through the second half when Mathew Leckie, who caused Holland no end of problems with his pace on the right flank, looked poised to put Australia 3-2 in front, only to chest the ball gently into the grateful arms of Jasper Cillessen, the Dutch goalkeeper. “I said to Danny Blind and Patrick Kluivert [the Holland coaching staff], if they miss an opportunity like that, we’re going to take it,” Van Gaal said.

And so they did, thanks to a moment that Mathew Ryan, the Australia goalkeeper, will have nightmares about. Memphis Depay, a first-half substitute for Bruno Martins Indi, who was taken to hospital with suspected concussion following a clumsy challenge from Cahill that earned the Australian a booking and a suspension for the final game, strode forward and thumped a swerving shot from 25 yards that Ryan looked to have covered – only for the ball to find the corner of the net via his fingertips.

Holland saw the game out, but this felt like a reality check on the back of their 5-1 victory over Spain in Salvador last Friday, and prompted fresh questions about Van Gaal’s tactics. The Holland manager had decided to retain the 5-3-2 system that worked so effectively against Spain but he reverted to 4-3-3 at the interval after losing Martins Indi and accepting that something had to change to enable his players to get a grip on a game that Australia were controlling in the first half.

“Fortunately it turned out OK, but it could just as well have turned out differently,” said Van Gaal, who lamented the way in which Holland gave possession away so carelessly in the first half. “In the second half we created more opportunities. I really have to congratulate the team, compliments to them, because the way we came from behind was incredible. I never want to put any individual in the limelight, but the way in which Nigel de Jong took the lead was impressive.”

Holland’s opening goal came totally against the run of play, albeit via a predictable source. Daley Blind’s header released Robben on the halfway line and the Bayern Munich forward skipped away from Matthew Spiranovic’s wild and desperate lunge. There was only going to be one winner and one outcome. Going through the gears in the inside-left channel, Robben sprinted into the area and drilled a low left-footed shot across goal and into the far corner of the net.

What followed 70 seconds later was remarkable, but no more than Australia deserved. Ryan McGowan floated a perfectly weighted 40-yard diagonal pass into the path of Cahill, who struck a sumptuous left-footed volley that clipped the underside of the bar and bounced over the line. It was Cahill’s fifth World Cup goal and a moment of brilliance.

Mark Bresciano and Spiranovic both had chances to put Australia ahead before Mile Jedinak converted from the spot in the 54th minute after Daryl Janmaat was adjudged to have handled. Holland were on the back foot, but within five minutes Van Persie, who will be suspended for the final group match against Chile after picking up another booking, registered his third goal of the tournament with a vicious shot into the roof of the net.

Then came Leckie’s miss and Ryan’s blunder, leaving Australia crestfallen. “I’m heartbroken,” Postecoglou said. “I just wanted the players to get reward. I put a lot of pressure on, saying we’d take the game to world class opposition, but it’s one thing saying it and another doing it. They did it today and didn’t get reward.”

He added: “Maty is very disappointed, he’s distraught. But it’s not about one player costing us the game. I thought collectively we were outstanding. We did everything we needed to do today bar win a game.”

The trailer of Salman Khan’s much awaited movie ‘Kick’ launched on Sunday June 15 crossed 4 million views in just 40 hours while Dhoom 3 and Krrish 3 took six and four days respectively to reach the same number.
Salman Khan as ‘Devil’ in a superhero avatar is a bit hard to digest. Without any superpower  he is climbing over a running train, jumping from an all terrain bike and walking in slow-mo in front of a running train, jumping on a helicopter riding the bike etc. Only Salman Khan has got the license to perform all these kind of stunts.

The scenes look ‘inspired’ from number of Hollywood movies like Expendables, Mission Impossible etc. In case of Kick the debutant director Sajid Nadiadwala has left no stone unturned and has got Hollywood action directors (Philippe Guegan and Spiro Razatos), who will show us the same what we’ve seen before – over exaggerated action.  The scene of Salman Khan walking casually in front of a running train throws all the logic out of window.
It is not just the action. Even the humour falls flat and may actually prove to be one of the major flaws of the movie. The movie will surely gross some huge numbers at the box office, but from any angle it is not looking something very different from the movies we have seen in the past.

The fate of the movie totally will be dependent on the positive word of mouth (WOM) and superb content. The pre buzz of the movie is at zenith and will surely help in getting a bumper opening at the box office. That means more of the same in future. Some things never change in bollywood.

Salman Khan insisted on removing 'Fugly' track from the film?

If you've been grooving to the popular track Ye Fugly Fugly Kya Hai, this one is for you. The song featuring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar is not included in the film which hit the theatres on Friday. The omission has shocked the industry as well as Salman and Akshay's fans.

After the film's initial trial shows, news started trickling in that the track featuring the two stars was not to be seen anywhere in the film. "But nobody expected that the final copy of the film which hit theatres on March 13 would not have the two A-listers," said a source. 

Buzz is, it was Salman who compelled Ashwini Yardi (the film's co-producer) and Kabir Sadanand (film's director) to eliminate the song from the final draft. "Salman was not happy with the song, he had issues with it," added the source, On March 19, Mirror had reported that while the song was being shot, Salman felt that Akshay was hogging the limelight and had stormed out from the set after shooting the first stanza.

The move has not pleased exhibitors like Manoj Desai, who says, "The people are feeling cheated. Why do bogus publicity?" However, Yardi says that Salman did not press the `Eject' button. The producer stated that she had made it clear at the trailer launch held in early April that the song was simply a promotional measure. Offering her version on why the song got chucked, Yardi said, "Fugly is a content driven film which deals with several burning issues of our society. The song did not fit into the film."

But debutant actor Arfi Lamba who was a part of the song, said: "I think the makers were unable to fit it in the film, though I don't know the reasons." 

Claiming that he was not disappointed that his dance moves with Salman and Akshay will not be seen on the big screen, Lamba quipped, "The song already has 4 million hits onlines." 

Salman Khan to help launch Bhagyashree's son in Bollywood

Actress Bhagyashree and her entrepreneur husband Himalaya Sassani were planning to launch their 24-year-old son Abhimaanyu as a hero last year. Apparently, due to dearth of substantial offers, the plan never took off. However, if sources are to be believed, none other than Salman Khan is helping his former co-star's son to make a place in Bollywood.

Says a source, "He was to get launched last year but the offers were not good enough. That was when Bhagyashree turned to her Maine Pyar Kiya co-star Salman Khan for help. Salman has been known to help many youngsters including Arjun Kapoor and Katrina Kaif who are stars today. Salman has promised to take Abhimaanyu under his wings and is guiding him about the do's and don'ts of acting. The superstar has told Abhimaanyu to work out and build his body and may even launch him in one of his home productions. However, everything is being strictly kept under wraps right now."

The aspiring actor has taken dancing, acting and action classes along with assisting director Rohan Sippy for Dum Maaro Dum and Nautanki Salla. He has also done a course from
The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute and Anupam Kher's Actor Prepares.

Abhimaanyu is friends with Tiger Shroff who apparently advised him to talk to the star. "Salman has launched two star children, Sunil Shetty's daughter Athiya and Aditya Pancholi's son Suraj in his home production. He has been very supportive to Tiger too," the source adds.

When contacted Bhagyashree says, "At this point of time we would rather remain low-key. Abhimaanyu is working hard towards his goal but it's pointless to come into the limelight and then fade away, so let there be an appropriate time. When it is closer to his goal I will personally call you up and tell you. Just give it a little time. I haven't spoken to anyone so far."

Salman is now almost at par with director Sooraj Barjatya in all decision-making of the film.

Salman, who will be teaming with Sooraj Barjatya after almost 15 years, will be seen playing a double role - the characters of Prem and Vijay in the film.

The film will have Sonam Kapoor opposite Salman.

The shooting will start from June this year and the film is set for Diwali 2015 release.

Movie Review: Filmistan

As the film’s title appears on the big screen you hear RD Burman's signature crooning that cross fades with the suggestive panting of a man at an audition for a chocolate ad and that pretty much prepares the viewer that the film will be a light hearted take on films. Amid light hearted film humor, Filmistan beautifully deals with the much talked about Indo-Pak relationship and subtly drives home the point that we are all the same irrespective of which side of the border we come from. “Ghar, khana, shakle sab same hain,” quips the abducted Sunny Arora as he can’t believe he is Pakistan.

Director and screenplay writer, Nitin Kakar chooses a rather sensitive cross-border issue for his first film and uses Hindi films as a successful tool that bond people across the borders. The animosity is forgotten when heartwarming discussions on Kapoors and Khans gain momentum and recalled the next moment when a running commentary decides who the winner was on the cricket field.

Sharib Hashmi plays Sunny Arora, the Delhi boy who despite realising his lack of talent as an actor dreams to be a big star because his life thrives on Hindi films. Nitin Kakar writes a heart-warming character in Sunny who is cheeky, friendly, happy-go-lucky and famously filmy. Even in the gravest situations he finds solace in Hindi film dialogues and songs. That’s why after being beaten up by his abductors he unabashedly performs a Maar dala to his applauding audience of young Pakistani kids.

In an industry where subtlety is a far cry, Filmistan comes as a refreshing change. So when the struggling actor Sunny Arora tries to help someone lying in the middle of the road, the RJ on his car stereo sells the next song: from Bobby, lyrics by Anand Bakshi and Lataji on the vocals. The song screams- Ayyeee phasaaaa; a subtle musical comment on how the main protagonist is gagged and transported to Pakistan.

The only grouch I have is that the film doesn’t quite hold the amazingly written scenes together. It seems the scenes were written separately, like different thoughts, and then beaded together in a film. Hence they look slightly disjointed and not parts of the whole. The upside is that it adds many layers to a story that could have been just another Indo-Pak story.

On one hand, the scene between Sunny and Hakeem ji evokes a deep sense of longing amongst old people who were born in Hindustan, on the other, the scene between Sunny and Aftab suggests the possibility of uniting both nations that would boast of world’s most envied cricket team and an unbeatable music industry. The film also makes brief comments on how the youth is misled by various extremist groups in the name of religion and how everyone is guilty of watching pirated films.

My favorite was the movie screening scene where a pirated version of Maine Pyar Kiya is played out to villagers in Pakistan and how Sunny Arora mouths every dialogue with aplomb when the CD goes mute for a few minutes in between. The dialogues ofMaine Pyar Kiya are cleverly chosen because when Bhagyashree says, "Hamare papa aur aapke papa bhi toh dost hain," it subtly refers to the possible friendship between the two nations.

Sharib Hashmi (who briefly worked in my office at ARN many moons ago, yay) loses not a single note as he plays the ever-so-talkative, chirpy, clean hearted Amritsari Punjabi boy Sunny Arora. He displays fear at his failed attempt to escape and sheer charm and unadulterated obsession with films the next moment as he plays different Hindi film actors to the young kids of the village.

 He has also written the dialogues in the film that are raw and rooted in the context. In a scene Aftab (Inamulhaq) summarizes the film in a beautiful dialogue “He could be Yousuf Khan in Pakistan and Dilip Kumar in India, it’s all the same.”

 After playing Shiva in Agneepath, he plays Aftab who has a flourishing pirated CD business and is a diehard Hindi film fan. His face shines up and his eyes sparkle as he holds a professional camera. His resolve to help his Indian friend is both convincing and award winning. BRAVO!!

Sachindra Vats, the editor of Filmistan deserves a special mention for keeping the film both taut and short before it became too preachy or dramatic. The film ends on a song, the last line of which says Laanat teri lakeera noo (shame on these borders) that beautifully encapsulates the essence of the film.

The film makes so much sense to the cine goers in Dubai. After all where else do we share our apartment, lunch box and power point presentations with the people from the other side of the border? I highly recommend this film.

Salman Khan micro-managing every detail of his next with Sooraj Barjatya

Salman Khan has been a Bollywood godfather of sorts for many talents, often suggesting actors for roles in his films.

And now the star is taking this responsibility further by cherry-picking most of the team members of his upcoming project with Sooraj Barjatya.

Right from the music composer to the technicians, Salman has personally selected the crew for the film that’s slated for a Diwali release next year.

A source close to the production house reveals, "Salman has been hands on with this film. He is already discussing post-production marketing strategies, figuring out who will take care of the promotions, and also recommending members for the technical team. The final decisions have been taken by both him and Sooraj ji."

Music composer for the film, Himesh Reshammiya, confirms this, saying, "Salman bhai is playing an important part by giving his inputs and suggestions. He recommended me for this film, but the final decision was taken by both Sooraj ji and Salman."

The film’s team currently includes Himesh, lyricist Irshad Kamil, editor Sanjay Sankla and director of photography V Manikandan. The team, brought on board on Salman’s recommendation, includes some people he’s worked with in the past.

Himesh says, "It will be my first time collaborating with the Barjatyas. I will be composing nine romantic tracks for the film. Not many movies feature romantic numbers these days, but it’s a tradition with the Barjatyas. A film like this gives good scope to a music composer to experiment. I will be going back to my roots, since the songs will be on traditional lines."

Kareena with Akshay Kumar in Singh Is Bling

Kareena Kapoor's career is on a roll again. She is not only on the verge of signing films with Sujoy Ghosh (in the title role of Durga Rani Singh) and Bejoy Nambiar (there is every likelihood that she would be cast opposite Farhan Akhtar in Nambiar's film) but she is also been offered the lead opposite Akshay Kumar in Prabhu Dheva's much talked-about Singh Is Bling.

The actress who is suddenly inundated with a plethora of scripts says she is spoilt for choices.

Prabhu Dheva met Kareena on Friday. She apparently liked what she heard. 

When asked if Kareena would have much to do in a film where Akshay Kumar plays the title role, Prabhu says, "The heroines in my film always have their own space in the plot. Was Sonakshi Sinha in Rowdy Rathod or R... Rajkumar just a decorative doll? No way! My films may be titled after the hero, but the heroine has no reason to complain." 

One hopes Kareena is sufficiently reassured.

Shahrukh Khan Salman Khan Rivalry: Why Deepika Padukone Refused to be Part of Salman's 'Kick'

Reportedly, Deepika Padukone was approached for a special item song performance in Salman Khan's upcoming film, Kick, for which the actor has been shooting non-stop. However, the Chennai Express actress turned it down.

This act reveals her loyalty towards Shahrukh Khan, who launched her Bollywood career through the 2007 hit, Om Shanti Om, reports DNA.

With a string of superhits behind her, Padukone is currently the most sought after actress in Bollywood. She also stars in SRK's upcoming film Happy New Year. Her appearance in the eagerly-awaited Salman Khan starrer would have only added to her glorious run at the box office but clearly, she wants to stay aligned to SRK.

Now, as per latest rumours, Salman's ex flame Katrina Kaif might be roped in for the item song in the film. The former couple was last seen in the 2012 blockbuster action film - Ek Tha Tiger.
